Greener Brockenhurst Apple Day

For anyone with a bumper crop of apples this year Greener Brockenhurst set up a community apple pressing day in the ground of St Saviours church…

18th October 2025

This was a joint venture with Eco Church and thanks go to the church for the free use of the grounds and the kitchen facilities.

2025 has been a great year for apples, but lots are small due to the long drought so ideal for making into juice.

On a beautiful autumn Saturday everyone gathered with their bags of washed apples to find out how to turn them into delicious juice. A good mix of varieties produces the tastiest juice, so all the apples were blended together and this made it much simpler to ensure everyone went home with a few tasty bottles of apple juice. 10kg of apples make about 5 litres of juice and the process is fascinating and very hands-on.

The first stage was to chop apples into quarters or smaller chunks, discarding any bruised apples or any bits with creepy-crawlies inside, then they were crushed up in the hand-operated scratter before being pulped in the apple presses. It was very enjoyable if a little sticky and everyone soon got into a productive team under the guidance for the Greener Brockenhurst team. All the waste has gone for composting and thanks go to Pennington ton Community Allotments for the hire of the equipment.

A great morning’s activity for all ages and scrumptious juice to enjoy at home later.
