FINANCE: Legally speaking…
Tax is a fact of life, paying it can be complicated and, for new businesses, possibly also daunting. However, it doesn’t have to be so, and we spoke to Elliot Cargill from Charlton Baker Limited, about the services they offer.
Paying taxes for a new business, or indeed any business, can be stressful and it is easy to put it in that pile of ‘things to do – later’. However, it is so important to establish good procedures early on, what do you advise?
We very much like to support our clients and ensure there are no surprise tax bills late on. To do this, we try to understand the business from our earliest engagement and ensure at the same time that our clients understand their responsibilities and the schedule of timings.
It is also important to build a good relationship going forward, especially for new businesses who are juggling lots of plates as they grow their businesses, how can you help?
One of our key concepts is Real Relationships. We don’t just want to be there for the compliance work, to tick boxes. We want to help our clients understand their business better and in doing so we feel we can really be a difference maker to the client. We can offer the most basic services right the way up to a fully outsourced finance function, whatever fits the needs of the individual client best. We are very fortunate to have a great team who are on hand to carry out, accounts prep, tax compliance, tax advice, payroll, vat, bookkeeping, credit control, probate and will writing services.
The last year has been an incredible and unexpected hiatus in the lives of so many local businesses, how do you navigate them through the various tax initiatives that the government has initiated since the Covid crisis began?
We have made ourselves as available as possible to all our clients, have posted regular updates via our website and social media channels and have provided all COVID related work such as Grant applications, Job Retention Scheme claims and furlough calculations for no additional charge as we felt that this was the most important support, we could give during the pandemic to help our loyal clients.
And finally, what advice would you give a new business as they start to trade and grow in the local economy?
Look to have the right support at the right time to ensure you are able to concentrate on what you are best at, try to form real relationships with those you deal with, look ahead through relevant forecasting and believe in what you are doing.
