Festive Celebrations at the Weald & Downland Living Museum

The Weald & Downland Living Museum will be brimming with seasonal cheer this Winter, as it hosts a series of much-loved Christmas events that bring festive traditions to life in the heart of the South Downs National Park.

The popular Christmas Market returns on Saturday 22 – Sunday 23 November. Over 100 handpicked stalls will showcase artisan gifts, seasonal food and drink, and unique crafts, making it the perfect opportunity to discover thoughtful presents and indulge in festive treats. With mulled wine, music and plenty of atmosphere, the market is a highlight of the Museum’s seasonal calendar.

On Sunday 7 December, families can join the Museum’s annual Tree Dressing – a joyful celebration of light, music and colour. Visitors can enjoy songs, stories and craft activities throughout the day, before gathering for the magical tree dressing ceremony, where hundreds of lanterns are placed on the branches of the Museum’s aspen trees to symbolise hope and togetherness during the winter months.

A much-loved tradition returns this year with a brand-new experience: Green Father Christmas’ Elf School. On selected dates throughout December, children aged 4–11 are invited to step into the magical role of ‘elves in training’, taking part in festive crafts, from making traditional decorations to toys to take home. Along the way they’ll collect stamps on their special Elf School lanyard before presenting their creations to Green Father Christmas himself. Graduates will be rewarded with a festive gift, a certificate, and a hot chocolate with all the trimmings.

Hilary Cunningham, Learning and Programme Manager at the Weald & Downland Living Museum, said: “Christmas at the Museum is a truly magical time. With the historic buildings decorated, roaring fires, and the beautiful South Downs as a backdrop, the festive programme offers something special for everyone – whether you’re looking to shop for unique gifts, make memories with your family, or simply soak up the atmosphere of the season.”

With woodland walks, traditional crafts, and festive events for all ages, the Weald & Downland Living Museum is the perfect place to celebrate Christmas this year.
