LOCAL: Celebrate Wessex Folk Culture at Museum & Art Swindon

Running from 30 November 2024 to 8 March 2025 at Museum & Art Swindon, this exhibition features over 100 fascinating objects, films, songs, and stories that highlight the connection between people, place and folk culture. Created in collaboration with Wessex Museums and the Museum of British Folklore, the exhibition explores how traditional crafts, music, and storytelling continue to inspire modern creativity and foster community.Highlights include:Objects from museum archives and the Museum of British Folklore, many never displayed before.

Films and photography by Create Studios capturing Wessex’s vibrant folk calendar.A new folk song and story map by artists Chlöe Herington and Bridie Cheeseman. Councillor Marina Strinkovsky says, “This exhibition showcases our amazing heritage and offers a fresh perspective on Swindon and Wessex’s rich history. I encourage everyone to visit and explore these fascinating stories.” Curators Simon Costin, Mellany Robinson, and Amy de la Haye have assembled a delightful array of exhibits, from ancient shoes to customised skateboards, offering visitors a unique take on folk culture.

When the exhibition closes in March, it will tour other Wessex Museums, including Wiltshire Museum, Poole Museum and The Salisbury Museum, through to 2026.
