HOUSE & HOME: Astrology Aesthetic: Interior Design Styles For Each Star Sign

Whether you love or hate astrology, you can’t deny that star signs are a big part of our lives. Research shows people often turn to astrology in response to stress and anxiety, as well as helping to aim for future goals.

Colours and plants enhance the overall appearance of a space, and boost oxygen, so why not use astrology to influence your home and garden this spring?

Apartment rental brand Essential Living has teamed up with colour expert Momtaz Begum-Hossain on which colours and plants you need in your home this spring, according to your star sign.

Aries – March 21st- April 19th

Your Colours: Fiery reds and bright oranges

Your Plant: Poppy

If you’re an Aries, you’re motivated and driven by anything that can be turned into a competition. To coordinate your space with your optimistic personality, incorporate fiery reds and bright oranges into your home- guaranteed to put that spring in your step.

If you are wanting to give your home an interior refresh for spring, bright colours are the way to do it. Momtaz says, “High-energy colours like orange and yellow are visually stimulating and uplifting, and their vivid tones are energising, making you feel awake.”

The best way to incorporate these bright colours into your home is through accessories. Whilst experts recommend your wall colours to remain neutral- revealed as the biggest trend for 2021– lampshades, cushions and throws in these bold colours will transform your home beautifully for spring.

Bold colours however are not recommended in the bedroom, as their energetic aesthetic can be over-stimulating when you’re trying to unwind. Momtaz says, “Within the orange spectrum, the best shade for a bedroom would be a soft apricot. It’s warm enough to be uplifting and welcoming, yet light enough not to distract.”

The perfect plant for an Aries is the poppy, one of the luckiest flowers for Arians which is vivacious, energetic, beautiful, and bees simply cannot resist being attracted to it, encouraging wildlife into our gardens. Poppies thrive in alkaline, acid or neutral soil, so for the best results, grow in well-drained soil in full sun.

Taurus – April 20th- May 20th

Your Colour: Pink

Your Plant: Daisy

A Taurus loves to be more in touch with their natural, sensual side. They are ruled by Venus, and since Venus is feminine, Taurian’s should look at focusing on pink colours in their homes.

Momtaz highly recommends a trio of, Turquoise, cream and pink, colours she believes to be ‘summery’, ‘classic’ and ‘appealing’ – making it an ideal combination to embrace your sensual side.

In your garden, the perfect plant is the daisy which symbolizes innocence and purity. With proper care, daisies can last around two to three years, and just like their happy appearance, they are sun-loving plants. For best results, plant them in full sun, using a mix of organic matter, including sand, peat moss, and manure compost.

Gemini – May 21st- June 20th

Your Colour: Yellows and Light Greens

Your Plant: Tansy

Associated with the cheerful shades of yellow, Geminis are positive and uplifting but can also change their minds quickly. Known as social butterflies of the Zodiac, they can talk to anyone about anything.

Experts say Geminis should make use of earthy greens inside their homes this spring, which Momtaz believes is ‘an underrated bedroom shade’.

“Green is the colour of balance, harmony, and growth. When you’re going through periods of change, work-related stress, personal anxiety, or relationship strains, green can offer comfort.”

Incorporating elements of green in your home, whether it’s through plant life, a rug, or bedding, will promote peacefulness, so if you’re agitated when you enter it, you’ll start to feel calm.

In a Gemini’s garden, tansies should be blooming, along with being beautifully bright and uplifting, tansies provides several benefits in the garden and require very little maintenance, and acts as a staunch garden protector.

Cancer – June 21st- July 22nd

Your Colours: White, Grey, Silver

Your Plant: Water lilies

Cancers are well known for being emotional and over-protective which associates with soft, nurturing and receptive colours. Ruled by the moon, the colours Cancers need to opt for this spring are white, grey and silver.

Whilst experts revealed that this year’s most popular bedding colours are white, grey, and blue these soft, harmonious shades are perfect for promoting relaxation and tranquillity inside your home.

Momtaz says, “For an even more blissful night’s sleep, introduce accents of silver. Moonlight and silver share a connection, the moon is a symbol of winding down for the evening so will promote relaxation.”

For those who have ponds, Water Lilies are the perfect addition to your garden setting. Whilst they have Cancerian qualities and abilities such as an almost psychic sensitivity to energy and emotion, they spread out over the water’s surface in order to catch all the sunlight they need to grow properly, helping shelter your fish during those hot summer days.

Leo – July 23rd- August 22nd

Your Colours: Mustard, burnt oranges and blues

Your plants: Sunflowers

Whilst Leos are known to have a warm heart and thrive with creativity, it’s no secret that Leos are also the most confident of the star signs – and their home should reflect that.

A mix of royal and sky blue, combined with mustard yellow is a ‘bold, striking combination that commands attention, and makes a statement according to Momtaz, and is perfect for a Leo’s home this spring.

If you want to show extra confidence, royal blue is the most majestic choice. It’s bold, striking, and luxurious, and can evoke the grand feeling of being in a stately home, even if you’re living in a contemporary apartment.

The vibrance of your personality is best expressed through the sunflower, and these flowers aren’t just pretty faces! They have many benefits including their cut flowers and free edible seeds. They also help detox contaminated soil and attract bees and pest-patrolling birds, to improve your harvest.

Virgo – August 23rd- September 22nd

Your Colours: Earthy blues and greens

Your plant: Ivy

Virgo’s intelligent and analytical nature can sometimes lead to them looking on the negative side of things, which is why incorporating earthy colours such as greens and blues will help promote positivity.

Whilst Virgos can also experience bad dreams, incorporating these colours into their bedrooms is particularly important. Momtaz recommends creating a soothing tranquil paradise in your bedroom by opting for a colour palette that features fresh blues and earthy greens.

“Green signifies nature, and restores equilibrium so will soak up any negative tensions. You can enhance the power of green further by introducing plant life into the bedroom, such as trailing ivy which also purifies the air.”

Ivy is one of the best houseplants, holding medicinal benefits it can drastically reduce the airborne mould in a room in just hours, which is particularly great for allergy sufferers in search of better sleep.

Libra – September 23rd- October 22nd

Your Colours: Pastel pink, mint, lilac

Your plant: Pansy

Libra is one of the best signs to be around, well known for being kind, diplomatic and incredibly good with people. The colour palette combination for a Libra helps promote balance and harmony.

Spring and the Easter season are the perfect time to bring these light pastels into your home décor, which is why Momtaz recommends a ‘minimalist and timeless’ mix of pastel pink, mint and lilac, which can be used to enhance a room that may feel a little too dull.

A great way to do this is with the 7-2-1 ratio technique, by choosing three shades – one neutral, one colourful but light, and one bold. By dividing these across your space with a ratio of 7-2-1. So seven-tenths of the room should be neutral, two-tenths lighter and colourful – leaving the final tenth bold. This will add colour to your space in a non-domineering and balanced way.

Edible pansies are perfect for Easter, Mother’s Day, or just a spring celebration, and also the ideal pairing for a Libra’s garden. Not only do they look beautiful but they also have many health benefits, being used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, whooping could, and bronchitis.

Scorpio – October 23rd- November 21st

Your Colours: Crimson, Black, Maroon

Your Plant: Black poppy

Scorpios are well known for their passionate and fiery nature, but there’s a lot more to them than just that! Scorpio’s are also intelligent, and resourceful – if not a little stubborn.

To match their fiery nature, colours including crimson, black and maroon, are a perfect way to promote and invigorate intelligence.

Whilst it’s common to see accent black walls in homes gracing the pages of interiors magazines where they’re highly stylised to create jaw-droppingly beautiful imagery, you need to be careful when incorporating black yourself, as you don’t want to darken your space.

The trick here is if you have neutrals on the walls and in your decor, use a dramatic black or dark grey trim on the doors or windows to make them pop- almost like using eyeliner for your home.

To reinforce a Scorpio’s bold and brave nature, black poppies are the ideal match here, stars of the late spring flower garden certainly stand out from the crowd.

Sagittarius – November 22nd- December 21st

Your Colours: Lime green, coral and buttermilk

Your Plant: Elderberries

Sagittarius’ are adventurous, imaginative and funny – so it’s only right that they should have a bold, fun combination for their spring interiors. According to Momtaz, humour is best represented by a striking mix of lime green, coral and buttermilk.

You can start with your walls here, as Momtaz believes light green is a dependable colour. “It looks attractive but also carries the positive energies of green, without being overpowering.”

Coral interior accessories are extremely fashionable, and just adding a few cushions, throws or lampshades in the shade will instantly brighten your home and express your imaginative side.

Elderberries are the chosen plant for Sagittarius, which commonly appear in the springtime. Elderberry bushes are extremely easy to grow and care for, thriving in full sun or partial shade- and the perfect ingredient for making fresh breakfast smoothies.

Capricorn -December 22nd- January 19th

Your Colours: Emerald green, dusty pink and beige

Your Plant: Silver birch tree

Capricorns are known for being independent, self-assured and even a little bit stubborn…but does that make them boring? Definitely not – which means their homes shouldn’t be either.

Holding a great deal of responsibility, Capricorns are best reflected in a mixture of emerald green, dusky pink and beige – a bright, yet firm and reliable combination.

Momtaz believes, “Beige will always be a safe colour, best reserved for corridors, or a home office.” Whilst it can make your space feel a little clinical rather than comforting, pairing it alongside emerald green or dusty pink transform your space for the spring.

With the responsibility of a Capricorn, comes their silver birch tree pairing, whilst they are low maintenance to start blooming in the spring, in the winter months pruning is essential to keep its ornamental shape.

Aquarius – January 20th- February 18th

Your Colours: White, duck-egg blue and soft pink

Your Plant: Dandelions

Aquarian’s are creative, thoughtful and intelligent – but can also be uncompromising, leading to impatience. Therefore experts recommend colours including white, duck-egg blue and soft pink will help calm an Aquarian down and alleviate stress.

Homeware Brand, Laura Ashley describes Duck egg blue and pastel blush pink as the perfect interior combinations, working beautifully together in any part of your home.

Aquarius’ gardens are in luck, as their plant pairing is dandelions, and spring is the return of the dandelion. They grow best in well-drained, fertile soil and prefer sun but will be just fine in partial shade.

Pisces – February 19th- March 20th

Your Colours: Peach, mint, baby blue

Your Plant: Fern

Pisces are soft souls, whilst they’re creative and artistic, they enjoy embracing their sensitive side and always emphasize with others no matter the situation.

Momtaz says sensitivity is best represented in the bedroom by a soft, but colourful combination of peach, mint and baby blue.

This beautiful shade of Green Parrot from Dulux is recommended by our experts, as painting your walls green can help in creating a calm and peaceful vibe. People who sleep in green rooms get an average of seven hours and 30 minutes of sleep per night.

In spring, we want to bring the outdoors in as much as possible, and fortunately for Pisces, their plant pairing is ferns, which make terrific indoor container plants. They have low light requirements and will boost oxygen levels in your home this spring.
