New Writers’ Day in Bristol to Inspire Next Generation of Middle-Grade Authors

Bristol, 11th March – Bristol children’s book festival Storytale Festival has announced a new event to support aspiring middle grade authors in the South West to hone their craft, gain insider industry knowledge, and network with fellow writers.

Storytale Futures: Writers’ Day will take place at Arnos Vale Cemetery on Saturday 10 May and is aimed at budding and emerging writers crafting novels for 9 to 12 year olds.

The event features four acclaimed children’s authors from the South West – Sophie Kirtley, Rachel Delahaye, Emma Read and Ash Bond – leading interactive workshops on character development, setting, voice and self-editing.

Writers will also have the opportunity to hear from industry insiders during a publishing panel and Q&A, featuring Penny Thomas (co-founder and publisher at Firefly Press), Jo Nadin (author, editor and academic) and Susie Day (author of inclusive children’s books).

After six years of running events for children, this is Storytale Festival’s first full day event for adult writers.

Ellie Freeman, Founder of Storytale Festival, says, “We know opportunities for aspiring children’s authors to learn from published peers and industry professionals are hard to come by. So we were inspired to create an accessible, affordable event that supports budding writers and helps demystify the industry.

“As well as picking up new storytelling skills and practical advice, this is a fantastic opportunity to network with like-minded writers. Attendees will come away with a new circle of connections who can offer support and motivation on their writing journeys.”

During one of the workshops with Sophie Kirtley, writers will be outside on the Arnos Vale grounds, learning about using real life places to add richness and depth to story settings.

Sophie comments, “I’m so proud to be part of the Storytale Futures Writers’ Day. The festival does such great work to bring books and stories to life for young readers – now it’s time for grown-ups to have a taste of the Storytale magic.

“It’s going to be a wonderful day of creativity and fun, and in a truly inspiring setting too. I can’t wait to explore Arnos Vale with the attendees and see the wonderful worlds they will create.”

Storytale Futures: Writers’ Day tickets are priced at £50.50, including lunch and refreshments. Limited spaces are available.
