EDUCATION: Scholarships at The Downs, Malvern
Situated on the Malvern Hills in its own 55-acre campus, The Downs Malvern is a co-educational prep school for children aged 3 – 13. Known as a pioneering, progressive preparatory school, the school is full of children filled with the excitement of learning, and the celebration of each other’s many achievements.
Children can join the school in any year and enjoy the excellent foundation for the next steps in their academic journey to a senior school at age 13. Some take advantage of our 11+ Scholarships and join in Year 7.
With its small class sizes, high expectations and breath of curriculum, The Downs Malvern offers the ideal preparation for the 13+ Common Entrance exams. The latest inspection report rated The Downs as ‘Excellent in all areas’ and stated that ‘Pupils are very well prepared for the next phase of their education with a considerable number gaining scholarships to their destination schools each year’.
Alongside rigorous academics, children at The Downs Malvern are fully integrated into a rich extra-curricular programme. Here they benefit significantly from opportunities to develop resilience, finding new levels of determination and motivation. Which in turn allows them to develop and flourish as individuals.
Children can try their hand at many different creative activities, art, drama music and design technology as well participate in a wide range of sports in the school’s excellent sports facilities. The school operates the oldest, privately-owned miniature steam railway in the world – The Downs Light Railway. Children build, operate and maintain the working steam railway, with a track that stretches for over a quarter of a mile around the grounds and features a tunnel, station and points.
Children may wish to join the boarding community at The Downs and become accustomed to being away from home, in a small, nurturing environment. Some parents opt to full board their children whilst those attending as day pupils frequently utilise the flexi-boarding option.
11+ Scholarships are offered for pupils showing particular ability in academic subjects as well as Art, Drama, Music and Sport. Mr Alastair Cook, Headmaster, welcomes applications from the parents of children currently in Year Six.
